Is it OK to eat before cataract surgery?
NO solid food is to be eaten for at least 6 hours prior to your admission time. NO fluids (except water, black tea or black coffee) are to be taken for at least 2 hours before your admission time.
Is breakfast allowed before cataract surgery?
A: You can eat a light breakfast, such as toast or cereal. Foods that are greasy or spicy should not be eaten prior to surgery.
How long do I fast before cataract surgery?
You will need to fast for about 12 hours before surgery to ensure you are safe from this effect. You should also check with your primary care doctor about any medications you are on that could cause bleeding. If you are on any that could cause bleeding, they may recommend stopping them before surgery.
Can I drink water before cataract surgery?
No solid food for 6 hours prior to your surgery. No thick liquids after midnight (Milk, cream, orange juice, prune juice.) Up to 2 hours before surgery, we encourage you to drink clear liquids (coffee, tea, apple juice, water, soft drinks or meat broth.) Sugar in your coffee and tea is okay, but no milk products.
Can I use deodorant before cataract surgery?
Avoid wearing any makeup, perfume or cologne, aftershave, spray-on deodorant, or hairspray to the surgical center. Thoroughly remove any traces of these, especially from around your eyes, the night before your procedure.
Can you brush your teeth before cataract surgery?
You may drink clear water up to 3 hours before you are due to arrive at the Eye Surgery Center. You may brush your teeth in the morning before surgery. You may wear your hearing aid or dentures.
Do you have to take your clothes off for cataract surgery?
You will not be asked to undress prior to your surgery. Please wear clean loose fitting clothing such as a blouse or shirt that can be opened down the front.
How many hours should you not eat before cataract surgery?
On the day of surgery, do not eat or drink anything for a minimum of 8 hours before surgery. Please refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages for up to 24 hours prior to the procedure. Wear clean and comfortable clothes on the day of surgery, shower and wash your hair, and do not wear any makeup.
How long after cataract surgery can I sleep on my side?
Cataract surgery should not affect how you sleep, aside from wearing the protective eye shield to avoid rubbing the eye. Rubbing your eye or even water splashing in your eye can aggravate the chances of infection. You may also want to avoid sleeping on the side of the operated eye for the first 24 hours.
